Titel
Selective excitation and detection of Lamb waves for SHM applications
Abstract
One of the most frequently applied methods for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of plate-like structures, shells, and tubes is based on the transmission and reception of guided elastic waves. However, dispersion of various wave modes leads to complex signals which are difficult to interpret. Piezoelectric fibre patches (PFPs) have been developed which can be used to excite and detect Lamb waves. The PFPs are of low thickness having the potential to be integrated into structures. This paper deals with a novel method to excite PFPs. By this method a specific Lamb mode can be both excited and detected selectively. In addition, also selected directivity can be realized. These sensors can be used to identify and separate the different wave modes leading to a considerably better interpretation of the acoustic signals.
