Titel
Ecologically benign lubricants - Goodbye mineral oil
Abstract
It is of great interest to replace mineral oil in coolants by renewable resources that have a better ecological life cycle performance. Thus, the technical performance and the potential environmental impacts of ester oils made of animal fat and used cooking oil as well as polymer coolants were compared as sustainable alternatives for mineral oil-based coolants. The polymer fluid was superior in all analyzed potential impact categories to mineral oil. The impact scores did not exceed 1% of the mineral oil impacts. The developed esters oils and polymer fluids were effective lubricants, less costly, and environmentally friendly substitutes for mineral oil. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 16th International Colloquium Tribology Lubricants Materials and Lubrication Engineering (Stuttgart/Ostfildern, Germany 1/15-17/2008).
