Titel
Status of the development of cryogenic solid propellants
Abstract
The development of cryogenic solid propellants (CSP), which combines the advantages of solid and liquid propellants, was investigated. The idea of CSP-grains is to freeze into solids fuels and/or oxidizers that are liquid or gaseous at ambient conditions. Two types of such systems are conceivable such as premixed mono-CSPs and modular CSPs with alternating oxidizers. In an initial phase of investigations, model liquids like nitromethane, H2O 2, and kerosene were chosen to study by experimental methods the ignition and combustion of frozen liquids. The results show that the burning of modular CSP indicated stable combustion behavior and provides a broad spectrum of applications in rocket propulsion.
