Abstract
Mechatronic and adaptronic as a technology for smart structures are showing a high potential for optimizing structural system in general mechanical engineering. Especially the adaptronic permits to extend the classical load carrying or shape defining functions by incorporating sensing and acting properties. By adding advanced controllers, these systems are capable of self-optimization and, consequently, increasing their structural performance, economic efficiency, system reliability and life cycle. Therewith, the adaptronic can be considered as the consequent advancement of a mechatronic system. With the objective to bring adaptive structural system into market, at first new methods and procedures are needed to characterize and certify the active components of these systems such as actuators and sensors. Following, the methods and procedures has to be applied to the overall system with respect to a cost-effective product development. For the mostly used piezoceramic components, only limited, application specific analyses of their operational characteristics are performed. General design rules and assessment of their reliability cannot be drawn by this. Considering the overall state-of-the-art and the need of the market, a significant research effort is required to bring smart structure technology into market.
