Titel
Service architectures for large-area heterogeneous and mobile communications networks
Abstract
The paper discusses prospects for combined IEEE 802.11, Bluetooth, Hiperlan/2 and HomeRF networks with special reference to mobile applications, and emphasises the need for simple subscriber localisation techniques over short distances, so that ad-hoc networks can be automatically established without need for special configuration. The paper describes possible new mobile network topologies allowing for mobility, formation of domains and achievement of service quality, referring to communications "hot spots", as in large public buildings, airports and shopping centres, also allowing for audio-visual communications. The paper outlines characteristics of the Sun Microsystems company's "JINI", to the UPnP forum and to the Salutation consortium, and illustrates decentralised systems structures and domain linking, proposing an extended service structure.
