Abstract

The German regulation dealing with the disposal of waste wood (Altholzverordnung 2002) of 19.06.2002 enters into force as from spring 2003. In case of substancial utilization of waste wood a limit value for polychlorinated biphenyls (PDB) is included. This, however, requires reliable and validated analytical procedures for the determination of PCB in wood and wood based products. In addition the question of the relevance of polychlorinated biphenyls in recycling wood arises. To check the relevance of PCB in waste wood 39 statistically selected samples were tested. The samples were extracted and then analyzed by gaschromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). In the draft versions of the Altholzverordnung of 23.02.2001 and 06.02.2002 the proposed limit value for PCB was referenced to the sum of 6 congeners. In the meantime the German Altholzverordnung was changed to that effect that after summing up the 6 congeners a factor of 5 has to be included. This is equivalent to a reduction of the limit value. The results demonstrate that after multiplication with 5 two of the investigated waste wood samples exceed the limit value of 5 mg/kg. There are not polychlorinated byphenyls detectable in 31 samples and six samples show a content lower than the determination limit, respectively.
