Abstract
Biomaterials have gained increasing significance in a number of technological applications in recent years. This is valid not only for medical applications, but also in environmental technology and energy management. To understand the interaction and interface phenomena between materials and their biological surrounding is gaining increasing importance. In the paper presented here, net-shape powder technologies are evaluated regarding their potential for processing metal powders or polymers modified with powders for biomedical applications. Metal injection moulding (MIM) and Micro-MIM were used to produce exemplary components of Titanium, Nickel-Titanium and calcium phosphate for medical implants. Selective laser sintering was applied for rapid prototyping of a human jawbone replica with complex inner structures, made of Ti-6-4 alloy. Extrusion of biodegradable chitosan / zinc acetate composites was developed for potential use as medical devices.
