Design of logistics networks - a case study
Abstract
The design of global production networks is a complex challenge. Although such networks are characterized by stochastic influences and concurrent time-critical processes, static approaches are state of the art for their design. This article shows experiences of modeling large supply networks using the tool OTD-NET, developed by Fraunhofer-Institute material flow and logistics (IML). The benefits of simulation in network design are shown with the sample application of the production network for Daimler AG´s heavy duty engine platform (HDEP). Multiple scenarios regarding flexibility, location alternatives, inventories, etc. were investigated using OTD-NET. The simulation results were used to harmonize production capacities and to identify cost optimal operating points of the network regarding capital commitment costs, logistic costs (including duties, insurance) and accelerated transport costs in case of stock-outs. The use of simulation in network design led to a robust HDEP production network. Time to market reduced from the logistic point of view.
