This thesis was created at the Fraunhofer Institute for Empirical Software Engineering. The thesis is related to the promising and rapidly evolving field of mobile business applications. With the rapid development of the smartphone and tablet computer market, enterprises feel a need to provide their service moreover on these mobile devices. Usually enterprises have a well established IT infrastructure and a set of mature and reliable services which they provide. Obviously, they want to adopt their existing services for the mobile platforms with the smallest overhead possible. Enterprises expect services on the mobile device to meet the same quality requirements as the ones provided on a regular basis, and even be enhanced by making use of the features specific to smartphones and tablet computers like GPS, Camera, touch screen etc.
While applying existing software engineering methods for the development of the mobile applications, one can immediately notice that these methods could be enhanced. The point is that the process of engineering mobile software applications has its own specifics, caveats and challenges which software engineers constantly face. Every time software engineers stumble upon the particular challenge they have to resolve it all over again thereby spending resources and increasing the probability of the fault. The process for engineering mobile applications could be more efficient if it contained the description of challenges of the mobile domain and either provided ready-touse solutions or guided towards finding the solution to them.
In this work we concentrate on the architectural design of the mobile application and processes which are used for its creation. We take the state of art Fraunhofer DSSA process for architectural design and supply it with our experience in the domain of mobile applications. We address the most critical architectural challenges in the mobile context and provide ready to use solutions for them. First we define the general way Fraunhofer DSSA approach can be tailored for the particular domain and then tailor it for the mobile domain obtaining DSSAMobile process in the end.
