Titel
Metal matrix composites with CNTs - processing, challenges and possibilities
Abstract
The use of Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) within metal matrix composites (MMC) has been greatly improved, not only from a point of view of CNT-metal matrix interface adhesion but also due to our ability to scale up the process. Our most recent MMC produced through high energy ball milling and hot press sintering exhibit an enhancement in mechanical properties both at lab scale and semi automatic scaled up process. With elongation & fatigue strength increased by 45% & over 65% respectively thus applications within the automotive industry seem ideal. A 500% decrease in friction coefficient with a lower thermal expansion of 20% lead us in the direction of bearing applications. A 700% reduction in process time as well as an increase of over 600% in MMC batch amount is now possible all of which is completely reproducible. Further working of the alloys such as extrusion & rolling only add to the improved properties.
