Abstract
We report on the layer structure, transport mechanism, and detection properties of low-noise QWIPs. These devices show high detectivity, low signal and noise currents, and distinctive noise characteristics which are analogous to shot noise rather than generation-recombination noise. Based on these detectors, we have realized a novel high-resolution 640x486 thermal imager operating in the 8-12 µm spectral regime with an excellent noise-equivalent temperature difference of better than 10 mK.
