Titel
Some new aspects of the winter anomaly of ionospheric absorption
Abstract
Newly published data on air pressures in the upper atmosphere suggest that seasonal variations of the collision frequency in the D- and lower E-region are larger than expected before. The height and latitude dependence of these variations are surprisingly well in accord with the corresponding characteristics of the winter anomaly. Further it is shown that seasonal changes of the relative concentrations of molecular and atomic oxygen, as postulated to explain the seasonal anomaly in the F-layer, will also give rise to excessive electron densities in winter in the region of strong-wave absorption around 100 km height.
