Abstract
Channel coding is valuable for protecting digital data in transmission and memory channels from all possible kinds of interference, especially in remote transmission, as from satellites, and in memory channels such as in CD players. Conventional realization uses a special channel adapted to the interference characteristics. By contrast, a different concept of a flexible channel codec, developed in the Heinrich Hertz Institute, Berlin, allows adaptation to various kinds of channel characteristics. The vital components in this codec are several universal register circuits using CMOS ICs. Error correction in the region of 2-34 Mbit/s can be appreciably improved, which is especially important when transmission costs are an important part of total cost. The concept of a flexible codec is discussed in detail and illustrated by two block diagrams.
