Abstract
Assuming an analog bandwidth of at least 30 MHz, the source bit rate of an HDTV camera exceeds 1 Gbit/s. The proposed coding procedure reduces it to less than 140 Mbit/s, which fits well into the future wideband integrated services digital network. Spatial-temporal frequency splitting exploits the high temporal redundancy of video signals. Motion adaptive digital filtering and quincunx sampling are performed in the first stage, and further spatial filtering into four subbands in the second stage. Due to the motion adaptation, only two out of four subbands are necessary in stationary parts of the picture. Transform coding of the low frequency channel is followed by quadtree and entropy coding of the high frequency channels.
