This paper describes a scheme suitable for increasing the playing time of digital HD-VCRs. As the DCT codec will be applied to a professional studio recorder, several requirements had to be taken into account for developing the coding scheme. These constraints are discussed in detail. The general structure of the DCT codec is explained and first simulation results are presented.
