Abstract
Titanium alloys exhibit an advantageous strength to density ratio and an excellent corrosion resistance. For this reason they have become indispensable in the modern aviation industry. However, these alloys are difficult to machine because of their high strength, low thermal conductivity and high reactivity with the cutting materials. Due to these properties titanium alloys are machined with low material removal rates resulting in extended processing times. The intension of this work was to achieve a fundamental state of knowledge on high performance milling of thin-walled integral titanium parts. Therefore the effect of the increased cutting parameters especially depth of cut, cutting speed and feed per tooth on the stability under load of the tools, the tool wear and the development of the processing forces was investigated. From the results of this investigation recommendations of cutting data for roughing considering several objective criteria were given . Furthermore the mechanical behaviour of the workpiece during the finishing process was simulated by using the finite elements method. To predict the workpiece deformation different allowance situations are simulated and compared with the real dimensional accuracy. As a result machining technologies were recommended to compensate dimensional errors.
