The state of the art of the application of optical signal processing devices and subsystems in present OTDM-systems in the bit rate region 10 to 160 Gbit/s have been highlighted. Some of the requirements and demands for future 1 Tbit/s systems and for future all-optical packet switching at ultra-high speed have been discussed. All-optical signal processing methods and applications will play a key role. New network concepts and the speed enhancement of semiconductor-based materials or the development of new materials for all-optical switching is a challenge.
