Abstract
The paper discusses distributed Raman optical amplification for 8*10 Gbit/s WDM modulated optical signals and reports on experiments over a 4000 km path without use of solitons. The paper reports that Raman amplification gives lower power peaks than Erbium doped fibre (EDFA) transmission. Block diagrams of transmission systems, some using discrete, others distributed, amplification, and also hybrid amplification, are presented.
