Car to roadside communication: Simulation of routing protocols and analysis of service deployment
Abstract

The next development step for future automobiles is interconnectivity amongst each other and the environment by means of wireless communications. The pursued goal behind it is to enhance traffic safety, optimize traffic flow and improve the driving comfort. With these technical improvements in mind, new requirements concerning the data processing evolve. Especially wireless ad-hoc routing protocols are faced with highly mobile networks that challenge their abilities on fast adaption and performance. Furthermore, offered application services need to be deployed throughout the network without using up too many resources. This thesis focuses on available ad-hoc routing protocols and concepts for a suitable service deployment. At first, the new 802.11p wireless standard is introduced and available routing protocols are reviewed with emphasis on adhoc routing. As a next step different service deployment strategies are discussed and deduced into a "Service Discovery and Deployment Protocol". A simulator shall enable testing of the protocol in different environments. Final network simulations of a pro- and reactive routing protocol combined with two deployment strategies show that DYMO and a three hop service deployment deliver the best results du to the low overhead, high throughput and because of the ability to rapidly react to topology changes.
