Abstract
Steel production using an electric arc furnace is one of the most energy intense processes. Typically 400-450 kWh/t electrical energy are needed. Up to 30% of the energy input is lost by the exhaust gas. In field experiments with post combustion of CO to CO2 by a regulated O2 injection a potential for energy savings up to 7% could be demonstrated. For the investigated case (steel production: 1m t/a) this means an energy saying potential of 33 million kWh/a.
