More and more companies tend to consider sustainable products to be very costly. Because of the material variety of mechatronic systems nearly the complete periodic system of elements is included. This kind of compositions corresponds with dedicated questionnaires according to toxicity and recycling attributes of the mechatronic systems. The methodology of designing sustainable mechatronic systems is regarded as enormous challenging and time-consuming. But in fact the concept of sustainable products, if properly applied and well managed, can provide a very powerful competitive advantage for a company. The paper shows a methodology of how to consider sustainable aspects during the conceptual design of mechatronic systems by combining the EE-Toolbox of the Fraunhofer IZM in Berlin and the specification technique of the Heinz Nixdorf Institut. A development guideline completes the methodology. The methodology is demonstrated by the example of a miniature robot.
