Abstract
This work presents a tool for extending annotation capabilities on video media objects on the web using Joomla! Content Management System as the development framework. Nowadays, the amount of video media on the internet is increasing significantly; there are many web sites that use video media as their main instrument of communication, therefore a need for annotation on video media web objects has increased as well. However, the existing video formats were not prepared to support such features. In addition, video media is time-based, that means the user will retrieve the information over time by watching the video. Therefore, analyzing and extracting information from video media by human perception is a time demanding task in large video repositories. For the reasons mentioned above this thesis provides a web tool for annotating video media web objects by three means: 1. Users can extend the information on video media by creating a video article using HTML; a video article can only contains one video. 2. Users can create annotations on video articles using HTML, they can define a start and end time for the annotations, the start and end time will define the time that the annotations point inside the video on the video article. 3. Users can create links to video related information inside video articles and annotations; links to related video define the start and end playing time playing for the related video media. This thesis argues that by searching user generated annotations that incorporate time parameters will help finding information inside video media faster. During each phase of the development cycle, user testing was conducted in order to identify usability problems.
