Carbon nanotube: Metal-matrix-composites based on copper and aluminium
Abstract
Carbon nanotube reinforced metal composites or carbon nanotube metal matrix composites (MMC) are claimed to be suitable for many applications. In our study we would like to highlight what achievements in the area of MMC have been already accomplished on the laboratory and industrial scale, and what kind of improvements are possible in future. Based on the last five years of R&D results of the Fraunhofer IPA in the area of synthesis, dispersion, pre-treatment of materials and production of metal nanotube composites, we show by way of example improvements achieved with composites containing aluminum and copper. We particularly focus on tribological and electrical properties of those composites. The experience gained from various production methods for nanotube reinforced metal alloys are demonstrated. Thereby, a clear separation between laboratory solutions and industrially available processes and materials is carried out. The currently present obstacles in the processing techniques are demonstrated and solutions are analysed. Various influencing factors are also mentioned, as for instance: dispersibility and the type of nanotubes, pre- functionalization of nanotubes, the particle size and condition of metal particles. Based on this, a forecast on processes and facilities, that still have to be developed, is made.
