A view on how simpler actuators, from a point of view of system design and manufacturing, can lead to industrialisation
Abstract
Within this talk, existing carbon nanotube actuators will be introduced followed by the definition of their main drawbacks from the point of view of industrialization. A potential solution in the form of an active/actuating 3D CNT gel system (A3D-gel) will be proposed. Assumptions of the system functionality and its advantages will be given with the main benefit being the increase in reproducibility through system and manufacturing simplification and automation. Furthermore, the system design and the prototype of the A3D gel will be shown together with the first experimental results and potential short and midterm applications. Suggestions on how to continue the development of such actuators will be made with a view on how research such as the isolation of actuating factors can contribute to a better understanding of carbon nanotube actuation phenomenon. Many promising technical advances have been limited by basic physical or engineering deficiencies. However, by going back to basics and through investigation of A3D gels as actuator systems there will be new areas within the industry where these mechanisms prove themselves both superior and practical. Without the above points researched the application of such systems within the industry can and will only remain a dream!
