China's chemical industry. Indications of scientific and economic competitiveness
Abstract
The chemical industry is one of the largest sectors in China. it has reached considerable scientific, technological and economic competitiveness in recent years. The paper analyses the development of China's chemical industry, using various quantitative indicators mirrored against recent policies. We found that scientific output in the chemical field is high, with China ranking on second to the US in terms of SCI publications. Although at a slower pace compared with the ICT sector, the chemical sector is making great progress in advancing its technological competence. The number of transnational chemistry patents with Chinese inventors doubled in 2004-2006. However, the gap between the science base and industrial application appears to be a big issue to the development of China's chemical industry.
