Management Summary including the Survey on the European Payments Market
Abstract
The third European trend survey »Banks & Future« was conducted at the turn of the year 2008-2009. It therefore was influenced by the global financial crisis and its impact on bank management. The shock of the financial crisis and the onset of recession in many countries are drivers for change in the European banking markets, even though some aspects of change in the banking business were already indicated before the global crisis as a sign of ongoing changes in the banking sector in general. The impact of the global financial crisis therefore is only one - although major - challenge for bank management. Banks also have to cope with changing customer behaviour that requires a push for innovation and new business models that encourage customer interaction. On the other hand, cost efficiency, risk management and process performance management within extended value networks should not be forgotten as they are key aspects of future competitiveness. In addition European regulation such as SEPA will more and more change the view of banking markets from a national to a European level. The European trend survey 2009 focuses on a number of key trends and issues, including challenges in the European banking markets, important strategies implemented by European banks, sales management in general and central topics such as brand management, IT investments and implementation of new internet services such as Web 2.0, maturity of process performance management, a glance at the European Payments market and an outlook on banking markets and banking in 2015.
