Abstract
Quality assurance in the wood products industry comprises tasks like the identification of different decors of the measurement of discolorations on decorated surfaces. These tasks do not require a complete surface scan but a high color sensitivity. Therefore camera sensors and image processing systems are often not suitable. As an alternative color sensors can be used which are integrated in a PC module. The sensor and light source is connected to a measuring head positioned closely above the moving surface on a conveyor belt using a fibre optic bundle, and thus a line scan can be obtained. WKI developed a system capable to solve identification tasks (e.g. for floor products) with a low-cost sensor and a fuzzy-based computation method. Preliminary investigations show that discolorations on decorated board products (e.g. caused by temperature deviations in the press) can be detected using a similar set-up but using UV light and a spectroscopic sensor with a high resolution in the wavelength spectrum. Due to very different tasks in the industry initial studies are recommended before an application is designed.
