Titel
Influence of humidity on butane-working-capacity of different activated carbons
Abstract
The VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions from vehicles with spark ignition engines are of major interest for the automotive industry. Activated carbon canisters are suitable devices for the recovery of fuel vapours. This work intends to determine the influence of relative humidity on the ability of different activated carbons to adsorb and desorb VOCs. With increasing humidity the BWC (butane-working-capacity, ASTM 5228-92) of all investigated activated carbons decreased for the initial adsorption/desorption cycle. After 6 cycles, the BWC for chemically activated carbon decreased up to 50 weight % compared to the result for dry gas. Whereas the BWC for steam activated carbon showed an upward trend which met with the result for dry gas. A possible explanation is the presence of numerous surface functional groups.
