Titel
Up- and down-conversion in fluorozirconate based glass ceramics for high efficiency solar cells
Abstract
Thermal processing of as-made fluorozirconate glasses, which were additionally doped with rare earth and chlorine ions, leads to enhanced fluorescence intensities. For up-conversion applications, the glasses have been doped with trivalent neodymium ions as the active rare earth ion, while divalent europium has been used to develop down-conversion systems. The samples were annealed up to a temperature of 290°C to initiate the growth of BaCl2 nanocrystals therein; the rare earth is incorporated in the glass as well as in the nanoparticles. The particle diameters are in the range from a few nanometers to several tens of nanometers. The development of glass ceramics doped with erbium, whose luminescence characteristics make it a better choice for the application as an up-conversion layer on si licon solar cells, is in progress.
