Titel
Synthesis and first combustion studies of a nitrate based ionic liquid
Abstract
By definition, salts being liquid below 100 °C are defined as ionic liquids. They are receiving an ever-increasing interest due to their unique properties and are under investigation in the field of energetic materials, too. Potential applications are energetic plasticizers or liquid rocket and gun propellants. This paper presents the synthesis of 4-Amino-1-methyl-1,2,4-triazolium nitrate (III) via alkylation of 4-Amino-1,2,4-triazole (I) with iodomethane and subsequently anion metathesis with silver nitrate. III has a glass transition point of -55 °C and shows low sensitivity against impact (15 Nm) and friction (160 N). First combustion experiments of III and one equimolar liquid mixture of I and III were performed in a pressurized window bomb at room temperature and pressures up to 13 MPa. The samples all showed low pressure dependence and even slightly decreasing burn rates at higher pressures.
