Abstract

Greater demands in the accuracy of machine tools can no longer be achieved by improved static and dynamic functions alone. The simulation of thermal behavior can provide essential information for the machine's design concept at the earliest stages of product development. This thesis describes methodology and implementation of a simulation tool, based on software utilizing finite element analysis. In addition to the modeling of drives and base components, the work focuses on coupling different sub-components. Heat sources of the main drive, feed drives and cutting process are described. Greater accuracy is obtained by the implementation of convection as a functional process in the simulation. Methods of implementing working area conditions and temperature deviations in the environment are illustrated. Finally, steps for incorporation of a thermal compensation mechanism are included to complete the concept. The workflow applied to a demonstration structure validates the theoretical background and demonstrates the functionality of the thesis.
