Abstract
The aim of this study was to perform benchmark tests for the measurement of some thermophysical properties of a first generation (high chromium containing) monocrystalline nickel base superalloy. For this purpose various samples of the same batch of the alloy were mechanically machined parallel to the <001> axis of the single crystal with dimensions specified by the participating laboratories. The samples have been tested in 6 laboratories using a variety of measurement techniques. Measurements were performed of the following properties: density, linear thermal expansion, specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and thermal conductivity as a function of temperature in the range 20 deg C to partly 1200 deg C. The results of these directly measured properties as well as derived properties from the measurements are compared and critically discussed. The overall result of this exercise is that comparison of specific heat, thermal diffusivities, thermal conductivity, linear expansion and density values for the solid nickel base superalloy are in good overall agreement and correspond very well with design data of this alloy. The gamma(')-precipitation reactions are thought to influence the results at higher temperatures and care needs to be exercised when performing the experiments in regions above 1000 deg C.
