Abstract
Diffusion-cooled lasers, preferably CO<-2 lasers. Said diffusion-cooled lasers have a discharge tube surrounded along part of its length by a coolant tube forming a coolant cavity. Electrodes are provided for connection to a power source. During operation, an inevitable electrode erosion takes place, said erosion resulting in a contamination of the laser medium and of the optical components of the laser. In order to prevent electrode erosion and thus a reduction in the performance of the laser, the power source is an alternating current power source and the electrodes are located outside the coolant tube. Thus the energy is injected into the discharge medium by the alternating current via the electrodes, whereby an electrode erosion is prevented. The diffusion-cooled laser ensures low-cost and effective excitement of the medium.
