Abstract
Delta-4's distributed fault-tolerant architecture aims to support incremental growth of functionality, dependability, and performance of distributed applications. The Delta-4 architecture features 1. A standard local area network technology, with minimum specialized hardware, to achieve fault tolerance using off-the-shelf host computers; 2. A distributed-application support environment to allow object-oriented description and programming of distributed applications; 3. Extensive use of multicast or group communication protocols to facilitate replicated processing; and 4. Built-in error processing and fault-treatment procedures to provide user-transparent fault tolerance by a powerful management system.
