Abstract
The basic idea of this research project was to use the manufacturing capabilities of a generative manufacturing system for building complex implants made of biocompatible resorbable materials. A technology called Multiphase Jet Solidification (MJS) has the necessary technological potential to build such implants. The special bio-compatible resorbable material is melted in the process chamber of MJS and extruded through an x-y-z controlled jet. Thus 3D hollow structures are fabricated layer by layer up to final extension. This paper discusses the production of bio-compatible, high stress resistant and resorbable implants using MJS technology. To create such implants it is necessary to design special structures. These structures have to support ingrowth of human tissue in the implants. Therefore, new design and building strategies have been developed. Improvements of the MJS process and material testing were accomplished. First results of this research is presented in this paper.
