Abstract
The resins of prepregs or adhesives are chemically reactive systems and the result of the curing depends on the composition of the uncured system. The matrix resins are a more or less complex mixture of one or more monomers and oligomers, curing agents, accelarators, thermal stabilizers and plasticizers in a well defined ratio. Additionally each of these components brings some undefined impurities in this system. For a constant quality in the manufacturing of composites it is essential to ensure that the chemical batch-to-batch differences of the formulated resin and of the finished prepregs do not exceed defined limits. At the first sight fibre reinforced plastics are solid materials such as steel. But as the prepregs are reactive systems and normally chemical reactions are not quantitative there are still some low molecular weight substances that remain and may diffuse to the surface of the polymer and of course to the surface of the fibres. In order to give some answers concerning t he chemical composition and the quantities of the single substances we can use the chromatography.
