CBN grinding at five hundred m/s
Abstract
Higher wheel speeds permit further increases in profitability and productivity. The necessity of higher wheel speeds requires a new wheel concept. This report describes the procedure from the requirement profile on a HSG wheel to approval by the DSA (German Grinding Wheel Committee). The comprehensive describtion of the analytical calculation method makes it possible to find an optimised wheel shape for each application. A stress curve approximately constant over the radius is simultanious minimize the radial strain. The natural vibration behaviour of the hub will be calculated by FEM. The calculations for a wheel of 350 mm O.D. operating at 500m/s have been described as an example. The practical determination of the characteristic values and of the calculated strain curves were checked by laser holography and tensile tests. The wheels have been approved for use of a maximum wheel speed of 500m/s by the German Grinding Wheel Committee.
