Titel
A Case Study of Evaluating Configuration Management Practices with Goal-Oriented Measurement
Abstract
The paper is describes the application of goal-oriented measurement for evaluating configuration management practices at Societa Interbancaria per l'Automazione (SIA). SIA is in charge of running, developing, and main-taining the National Interbank Network of Italy. A few years ago, SIA initiated a company wide software im-provement program by performing a CMM-based process assessment [14]. The results indicated that configuration management (CM) practice was one of the most promising areas for improvement. A project was initiated aimed at establishing an im-proved CM process supported by state-of-the-art tools and incorporating sound practices [4]. The new approach was decided to be applied for one of the most important prod-ucts which deals with the development of the new genera-tion of SIA's networking software. Goal-oriented meas-urement following the Goal/Question/Metric (GQM) ap-proach was applied to monitor the establishment of the CM process, and to gain experience for future r edeploy-ment of the CM process to other projects and departments. The paper describes the establishment and performance of the measurement program and related product and process modeling. Different techniques for performing qualitative and quantitative analysis of experimental data were per-formed. Selected results and experiences are reported.
