Abstract
In the production of group IVb, Vb and VIb metal carbonitride powders by firing mixtures of the corresponding oxides, carbon black and optionally further carbon-containing compounds in nitrogen-containing atmospheres, the metal oxides (preferably at least 60 mol% of the metal oxides) are used in the form of double or multiple oxides. USE - The carbonitride powders are used as hardness imparting components in sintered bodies containing at most 10 vol.% iron group metal binder and as additional components for WC/Co cemented carbides and/or TiCN cermets (claimed). ADVANTAGE - The decomposition of the double or multiple oxides, during carbothermic reduction and simultaneous nitriding, results in sufficiently high metal atom mobility that the need for expensive homogenisation annealing at high temperatures ( at least 2200 deg. C) is avoided. The process produces extremely homogeneous and fine-grained, low impurity content composite hard material powder, which has low oxygen and free carbon contents and which has good sintering activity, at low temperatures without additives.
