Hydrogen technologies offer large potentials in all strategies which aim to greatly reduce emissions of CO2. Assuming that by the middle of the next century a CO2 reduction of over 60% may be necessary, the implementation of a hydrogen-based economy is not only consistent with the condition of using the most economy energy supply; the CO2 reduction targets actually force the introduction of these technologies. Results were obtained by applying the optimization model to the probable future development involving assumptions and strategies relating to both energy demand and supply within the limits of their technical options.
