Abstract
New production techniques and applications have lead to changing requirements in the casting industry. The amount of needed prototypes increases because of extending complexities of casting products due to the integration of different components and the demand of shorter development cycles. This leads to the demand of new technologies which can produce prototypes faster and cheaper. The Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) from Stratasys Inc. is a Rapid Prototyping process that allows the use of investment casting wax and machinable wax. Waxes are both direct castable in a .'standard` investment casting process. At the Fraunhofer-Institute for Applied Materials Research (IFAM) a 3D Modeler was installed more than one year ago. idea of the Thyssen FeinguB GmbH and the IFAM was to test this RP-technology in the casting foundry in Soest. Test part was a electronic housing out of machinable wax which was casted in aluminium
