Abstract
The report "Analysis of the dynamic relationship between technical and economic performances in information and telecommunication sectors" provides an overall assessment of the competitive and technological performance of the Information Technlogy (IT) industry in Europe. The Report is based on a collaborative research effort of a German research team (the ISI-Fraunhofer Gesellschaft in Karlsruhe) specialized in the analysis of technological indicators and in particular patents and a Dutch research team (MERIT in Maastricht) specialized in economic and technological studies. The Report summarizes the results of the research carried out over a period of nine months in 1992. It consists of three Volumes. This first Volume, prepared by the two coordinators of the project Dr. Hariolf Grupp and Dr. Luc. Soete summarizes the overall methodology and presents the analysis at the aggregate IT and sectoral level. It also provides an overview of the definition of "IT" used throughout the Report ( section 1), the strengths and weaknesses of the main technology proxy used (patents) throughout the three Volumes of the Report (section 2) and illustrates at the detailed disaggregated level the trend over the last two decades of the international competitive (section 3) and technological position (section 4) of the European IT industry. Finally, it provides a number of statistical tests illustrating the nature of the relationship between technical and economic performance (section 5).
