Abstract
This paper deals with the results of a joint project with three major robot manufacturers and our institute for the development of software tools for the design of the mechanical hardware of industrial robots. From the users point of view the following criteria are of paramount importance: economic data input, accuracy of the model, selected output and graphical display of the computed data. The experience in the industry with our programme system ROBKON has shown that the most important problem of acceptance by the designer can be achieved due to various measures like clear documentation in the input file, flexibility of the programme for modelling complicated power transmission systems, inclusion of motor data and development of clear guidelines how to optimize robot structures.
