New production techniques and applications have lead to changing requirements in the casting industry. The amount of needed prototypes increases because of extending complexities of casting products due to the integration of different components and the de-mand of shorter development cycles. Under the general heading "Rapid Prototyping" (RP) a whole series of new technologies are developed for the production of models, samples and prototypes in a shorter manufacturing time and without tooling. Applications of RP in the casting industry are exemplary shown with the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) process. Possible reductions in time and cost through the integration of RP are presented.
