Titel
Abstract

LLDPE, LDPE, MDPE, HDPE and PP, as well as their laminates with PA, EVOH, PET and PVDC are above all the preferred packaging materials for the majority of personal care products used today. In terms of quantity, plastics packages occupy the leading position in the whole cosmetics field. Plastic is not an inert material and consequently, in principle, is able to enter into reciprocal actions with the product. The most frequently occurring physico-chemical interactions are, e.g. migrations of residual monomers, antioxidants, plasticizers and other additives from plastics materials into the product or migration of oil, fat and aroma in the reverse direction. Package-penetrating permeation processes in both directions are just as possible as the occurrence of disturbing odours and off-flavour by their permeation into the package or by their chemical formation. Calculation methods, equilibrium distributions, time-dependence, influence of the package geometry, among other things, are discussed with examples.
