Abstract
The invention refers to a process for the production of open-pored substrates and their application for the fixation and immobilization of catalysts, indicators or biomasses. The substrates are produced by mixing grain piles having a hydrophile surface and grain sizes ranging between 0.05 and 2 mm with a 0.1 to 20 per cent aqueous saline solution to form a moist, shapable compound, by shaping the mixture consisting of grain piles and aqueous saline solution into substrates after adding the saline solution, and by drying and sintering the substrates. The preferred implementations of the process according to the invention use chemically homogeneous grain piles, e.g. broken glass or sand, and aqueous NaCl solutions or seawater. The process according to the invention provides low-cost, wear-resistant and mechanically stable substrates whose pore diameters can be varied over a wide range.
