The invention relates to a process and a device for the metered application of a liquid medium on a surface of a workpiece. The process, in which the medium is stored in a storage vessel and is fed from there by means of a metering pump via a first line to a head of an application device, where it exits from a discharge opening, whereby furthermore the workpiece and the head move relatviely to each other, is characterized by the fact that the medium exiting dropwise from the discharge opening is suctioned completely or partially via an inlet opening in direct proximity to the discharge opening by means of a second metering pump and is returned to the storage vessel via a second line, whereby the surface of the workpiece and the discharge opening are placed at such a mutual distance that at least the drops completely formed at the discharge opening make contact with the surface of the workpiece. The process and the device are in particular suitable for the application of paints or varni shes on optical components.
