Process for the removal of material from metallic workpieces (10) with tool movement relative to the workpieces, in particular for the cutting of metal sheets, by which the surface (11) of the workpiece (10) is preheated to a temperature without melting, by which an ignition takes place through the use of combustible gas (12) which is blown onto the preheating area (13) in the form of a pressurized jet and blows away burnt material from the workpiece (10) from a removal recess (14) formed by combustion. In order to obtain smooth walls at comparably high feed rates with thick workpieces, the process additionally trains a laser beam (15) onto the removal front (16) in the removal recess (14) in addition to the combustible gas (12).
