Investigation of possiblilities to minimize the hydraulic resistance of gel layers on membranes during the separation of proteins
Abstract
The investigation shows with the example "ultrafiltration of proteins from potato fruit water" the principal correlation between the limitation of permeat flux and the properties of the retentate solution. Describing the limitation of flux by a resistance model it makes sense to distinguish between one part of the resistance which can be influenced by crossflow (gel layer resistance) and another part which can not be influenced by crossflow (adsorbed resistance). The adsorbed resistance is mainly influenced by the pH-value. The correlation between gel layer resistance and the Reynolds number of crossflow depends on the concentration of solid particles in the retentate solution. From these results consequences for the optimization of ultrafiltration systems can be deduced.
