Title

Ultrasonic Measurement of Hardening Depth

Abstract
Induction and flame hardening are standard heat treatment procedures for generating hard cases in steels, typically thicker than 1 mm. Examples are crank shafts for diesel engines or rollers used in mills. The standard technique to determine case depth is to destroy one component from a batch and metallographically study the cross section. This procedure is expensive and obviously does not assure complete coverage.
